Mark Zuckerberg is an American co-founder and CEO of the social-networking website Facebook, and one of the world’s youngest billionaires.

Born in 1984, Mark developed an interest in computer programming at an early age. At the age of 12, he created Zucknet, a messaging program that he implemented as an inter-office communication system for his father’s dental practice.

While he was in high school, Mark’s parents got him a computer programming tutor and enrolled him in a prep school in New Hampshire. After graduating from high school, Mark enrolled at Harvard University. Mark quickly became known as a go-to computer programmer on the campus.

During his sophomore year, Mark built two programs namely, CourseMatch and FaceMash which became wildly popular at the campus, but the university shut down the program after it was considered inappropriate.

After shutting down his program, Mark partnered with friends to create a networking site that allowed Harvard students to connect with each other. The site was named “The Facebook” which officially went live in June 2004 and they ran it out of his dorm room.

After his sophomore year, Mark dropped out of college to pursue working on “The Facebook” full-time. At the end of 2004, “The Facebook” reached one million users.

As the user of the website grew, it attracted the attention of many investors. Facebook received its first round of capital investment from  Accel Partners which invested $12.7 million in the site.

In 2005, Facebook reached 5.5 million users and received numerous investment offers from Yahoo and Microsoft has been through legal battles, and has greatly increased its user base.

In 2010, Mark reported that Facebook reached the 500 million-user mark. In 2019, Facebook reported that the daily active users averaged 1.62 billion and a monthly active user totaled 2.45 billion. As of 2020, Mark owns over 375 million Facebook shares and holds 60% of voting rights in the company.
