Larry Ellison is an American business magnate, investor, and philanthropist who is a co-founder and the executive chairman and chief technology officer (CTO) of Oracle Corporation.

Born in 1944, Larry was given to her aunt and uncle by his biological mother for adoption when he contracted pneumonia at the age of nine months.

Larry attended  South Shore High School in Chicago and later was admitted to the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and was enrolled as a premed student. In 1966, Larry attended the University of Chicago for one term, studying physics and math.

During the 1970s, Larry began working for Ampex Corporation. His projects included a database for the CIA, which he named ‘Oracle’. In 1977, Larry founded Software Development Laboratories (SDL) with two partners.

In 1979, the company renamed itself Relational Software Inc. and officially became Oracle Systems Corporation after its flagship product, the Oracle Database in 1983. The initial release was called Oracle 2. Larry had heard about the IBM System R database and wanted to achieve compatibility with it but IBM made this impossible by refusing to share System R’s code.

In 1990, Oracle had a crisis that almost resulted in bankruptcy and laid off 10% of its workforce because it was losing money. Eventually, Oracle had to restate its earnings twice and had to settle class-action lawsuits arising from its having overstated its earnings.

Oracle enjoyed years of industry dominance until the rise of Microsoft SQL Server in the late 1990s and IBM’s acquisition of Informix Software in 2001 to complement their DB2 database.

In 1997, Larry was made a director of Apple Computer after Steve Jobs returned to the company. He resigned in 2002.

In April 2009, after a tug-of-war with IBM and Hewlett-Packard, Oracle announced its intent to buy Sun Microsystems. In 2010, The European Union approved Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems. The acquisition gave Oracle control of the popular MySQL open-source database, which Sun had acquired in 2008.

In 2010, Larry was ranked as the sixth-richest person in the world and as the third-richest American, with an estimated net worth of US$28 billion by Forbes list of billionaires.

In 2013, Larry appointed Mark Hurd to CEO of Oracle from his former position as President. Larry has assumed the positions of chief technology officer and executive chairman.

In 2016, Oracle bought NetSuite for $9.3 billion. In the following year, Larry was ranked as the 4th richest person in tech by Forbes. In 2018, Larry became a director on the board of Tesla, Inc. At the end of 2019, Larry owns 36.2% of the shares of Oracle Corporation. As of 2020, Larry was ranked to be the seventh most wealthy person in the world, with a net worth of $66.8 billion.
