James Altucher is an American hedge fund manager, entrepreneur, podcaster, and author. James co-founded over 20 companies and has published 20 books. He is a contributor to publications including The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, and The Huffington Post.

Born in 1968, James graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Cornell University in 1989. After graduating from college, his first job was in the IT department at HBO.

James left his job at HBP and sold the company he founded, Reset Inc., for approximately $15 million in 1998. He lost all the funding proceeds in the span for two years that should be for his new internet investments which led him to re-evaluate his approach to both business and life.

After losing the funding proceeds, James was hired to write about stocks by Jim Cramer of TheStreet.com and started trading for hedge funds. From 2002 to 2005, he traded for several hedge funds, and from 2004–2006, he ran a fund of hedge funds.

In 2006, James founded StockPickr, a financial social network which was named one of Time Magazine’s 50 Best Websites of 2007. James sold the company for $10 million in the following year.

In 2012, James was a seed investor in Buddy Media, which later sold to Salesforce.com for $745 million.

In 2013, James criticized Bitcoin as “a fad, or a scam, or a Ponzi scheme, or worse.” In May 2013, James built a store to sell his book, “Choose Yourself” for Bitcoin a month before he released it on Amazon. James was interviewed by Business Insider about why he reversed his point of view about Bitcoin.

In 2015, James launched a podcast with Stephen Dubner and he also hosts The James Altucher Show, which has featured Tim Ferriss, Mark Cuban, and Arianna Huffington, among others.
